Post Community Concert, additions

Hi!  We had our concert that was all about the theme of community last month.  Just some additions as we continued our learning about being active community members – in our classrooms, in our school, in our neighbourhoods etc… Throughout our practices we had so many opportunities to talk about how their actions of collaboration, respect, cooperation, kindness (etc) during the practices lead to them developing into the active community members who collaborate, cooperate, demonstrate compassion, etc with others in their workplaces, towards others in their local and world communities…

Before the concert started, there was a half an hour video that played, showing these active community member qualities in action through activities throughout the year in class, on field trips, fundraising etc.  These videos and pictures were interspersed with quotes such as “Be the change you wish to see in the world”(Gandhi), and “Music can change the world because music can change people” (Bono).

I don’t think I pointed out the beautiful Wailin’ Jennys song that the choir sang at the end, called “One Voice”. This song has amazing lyrics that completely connect to the idea of community:  “This is the sound of all of us… Singing with love and the will to trust…”.  This song was performed during the WSO Adventures in Education concert series last year, in celebration of the opening of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights as well.

Families were asked if they could bring donations of items for Siloam Mission such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.  We had boxes and boxes of items to take in the following week!  So amazing!

Now, as we continue on, it is great to have the wordsplash page on the wall of different characteristics of active community members, because we keep referring to them as we learn new things and take new challenges together.  Just like our concert last year about the environment, I wanted the essence of what we learned during this concert to become part of how we think, moving forward…

Looking forward to sharing about our excellent fun as we learn all our folkdances for our amazing Folkdance in the Park event coming up soon!
